Where Is IT at Today?

IT is in an odd place right now.


For a long time, IT was easy for people outside the work to define. IT fixed the laptop. IT reset the password. IT kept the network up. IT bought the servers, patched the servers, replaced the servers, and got blamed when the printer decided to have an opinion.


That version of IT still exists. The tickets still come in. The basics still matter. But the center of gravity has moved.


Today, IT sits in the middle of almost every serious decision a business makes. AI strategy touches IT. Security risk touches IT. Cloud cost touches IT. Identity, compliance, endpoint management, remote work, automation, vendor sprawl, data governance, disaster recovery, and user experience all land somewhere in the same messy pile.


The hard part is that none of those things live in a neat lane anymore.


AI is a good example. Everyone wants the magic. They want faster work, smarter tools, cleaner summaries, better automation, and fewer repetitive tasks. Fair enough. There is real value there. But every AI conversation also turns into a data conversation, a permissions conversation, a security conversation, a training conversation, and eventually a trust conversation. The technology is impressive. The operational reality is less glamorous.


That is where IT actually lives.


Not in the demo. Not in the keynote. Not in the vendor slide where every arrow points in the right direction. IT lives in the part where the tool has to work with the environment that already exists. Old systems. New systems. Half-documented systems. Budget limits. People who are trying to do their jobs. Vendors with overlapping promises. Security requirements that are not optional. Leaders who need simple answers even when the real answer has edges.


Security has changed the job too. The old perimeter is gone, or at least not enough to build a strategy around. Identity is the front door now. Every SaaS app is part of the attack surface. Every convenience has a tradeoff. Every integration is a question: who gets access, to what, from where, and what happens when something goes wrong?


That does not mean the answer is to say no to everything. Good IT cannot just be the department of no. But it also cannot become the department of sure, whatever, good luck. The work is in making tradeoffs visible. It is in helping people move faster without pretending risk disappears because the interface looks clean.


Infrastructure is in the same place. Some of it is cloud. Some of it is still on-prem. Some of it is SaaS. Some of it is a mystery until renewal season. The boring layers still matter: backups, monitoring, patching, networking, access control, documentation, asset management. They are not exciting until they fail. Then they become the whole story.


That is probably the biggest tension in IT right now. The loudest conversations are about transformation. The most important work is often still about resilience.


Can the business keep moving if a vendor goes down? Can a user get back into their account without opening a security hole? Can data be recovered? Can someone explain how a system is wired together after the person who built it moves on? Can AI be used without turning every internal document into an uncontrolled experiment?


These are not abstract questions. They are the questions underneath the work.


So where is IT today?


It is somewhere between acceleration and accountability. Between the pressure to adopt new tools and the responsibility to make them safe. Between automation and judgment. Between shiny platforms and old fundamentals that still decide whether the day goes sideways.


That is what I want ITbyZ to be about now.


Not hot takes. Not pretending every new thing is either salvation or doom. Just notes from the middle of the stack: AI, security, infrastructure, tools, workflows, and the practical reality of making technology work when the environment is complicated and the stakes are real.


The signal is there. The job is finding it through the noise.
